Diabetic eye complications can lead to vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. In this article, we will explore the various eye complications that can arise from diabetes, their causes, symptoms and most importantly, steps you can take to protect your vision.

Description

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common and potentially severe eye complication resulting from diabetes. It occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Over time, these damaged blood vessels can leak fluid, leading to swelling and the formation of abnormal blood vessels. The symptoms may include blurred vision, dark or empty spots and difficulty perceiving colors. Diabetic macular edema is a specific form of diabetic retinopathy that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision. When the blood vessels leak fluid into the macula, it swells, distorting vision and causing central vision loss. Individuals with DME may experience difficulty reading, recognizing faces and performing detailed tasks [1].

These injections deliver medication directly into the vitreous gel of the eye, targeting the underlying cause of the condition and reducing swelling and leakage. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs and corticosteroids are commonly used in these injections. For advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy or cases where there is significant bleeding or scar tissue formation in the eye, a surgical procedure called vitrectomy may be necessary [4].

Vitrectomy involves the removal of the vitreous gel and any blood or scar tissue present. It allows the surgeon to repair the retina and improve vision.
