Dr. Amar Klar pioneered the field of epigenetics by discovering the first gene, named MAR1/SIR2, and implicated it in the gene-silencing phenomenon in budding yeast in the late 70s. His group also discovered other gene-silencing factors, named CLR (crytic loci regulatory factors), in fission yeast. Dr. Klar also discovered the DNA strand-specific imprinting mechanism for mating-type switching in fission yeast. This unique mechanism showed that developmentally asymmetric cell division results from the double helical structure of DNA combined with replication history of DNA strands.
