Research interests in microbiology: 1) Planctomycetes, a distinctive divergent phylum of domain Bacteria, members of which have compartmentalised cells and do not use peptidoglycan in their cell walls, of great interest for relevance to evolutionary cell biology and understanding evolution of cell complexity 2) bacteria associated with marine sponges, including the obligate marine actinobacterium Salinispora known to synthesise antibiotics and other compounds of pharmaceutical potential.
