Lecturer Physiology Biosciences, Institute University College Cork, Ireland
John Mackrill is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physiology, University College Cork. His research centres on the role of Ca2+ as a second messenger. This includes work on how dietary components (selenium, oxysterols) impact on Ca2+ signalling; and on how Ca2+ signalling mechanisms evolved. Key techniques in Dr. Mackrill's laboratory are fluorescent videomicroscopy (fura-2, fluo-4, GFP), protein biochemistry (Western blot, indirect immunofluorescent microscopy, protein isolation, analysis of protein motifs) and phylogenomics.
