Biography

 Professor, Physician, Social Entrepreneur and Corporate Executive. My overarching career goals are to improve worker health, safety, wellbeing and productivity. I do this through research, education, community partnership, public health practice, and software development. My mission in my University position is to educate and encourage the next generation of occupational safety, health, and wellness professionals and to provide innovative ways of improving the workplace through my research and practice. My mission at Axion Health is to use information technology to improve worker health by integrating medical and public health 'best practices' in a web-based platform.

 
Lee S. Newman, M.D., M.A. is Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health, and Professor of Epidemiology in the Colorado School of Public Health. He is also Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine in the School of Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver, Denver, Colorado, USA. He is the president and CEO of Occupational HealthLink, Inc., a health informatics company that improves worker health through the use of web-enabled technology and clinical decision support.
He has served on the University of Colorado faculty since 1987, initially as a member of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Division at National Jewish Medical and Research Center, and as the director of that Division from 1997-2005. He presently conducts research, teaches in the medical and graduate schools, and is the Director of the Mountain and Plains Education and Research Center (ERC) funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC/NIOSH). For 20 years, his clinical practice focused on the diagnosis, management and prevention of occupational and environmental lung disorders and granulomatous diseases, especially chronic beryllium disease. His epidemiologic and immunology laboratory research focuses on the immune basis of granulomatous disorders, metal immunotoxicology, the relationship between genetics and environmental triggers of disease, and disease prevention, especially chronic beryllium disease and sarcoidosis. He is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, more than 100 book chapters, commentaries, and reviews, as well as nine books on arts and crafts---an area of avocational interest.
Dr. Newman consults and serves on advisory panels regarding occupational health, especially occupational lung disorders. Advisory roles include work with the U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (CDC, ATSDR, NIOSH, and NIH). Dr. Newman is also the president and CEO of Occupational HealthLink, Inc. in Boulder, Colorado, a medical informatics company that performs web-enabled exposure, toxicologic, and medical data management to assist in the efficient delivery of occupational health surveillance services for workers and their employers.
Dr. Newman completed his BA degree at Amherst College and MA Degree in social psychology at Cornell University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He earned his MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship training in pulmonary medicine in 1987 at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center and at National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Denver, Colorado, USA. Dr. Newman is a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.
