Dr. Narayanan Ramasubbu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Biology. He received his Bachelor of Science from Madurai University in India in 1975 and a Master of Science from the same institution two years later. A Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science followed in 1983. From 1983 through 1988 Dr. Ramasubbu was a Research Associate at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1988 he joined the faculty of the SUNY Buffalo Oral Biology Department. He came to the Dental Research Center at RBHS in 1997. Dr. Ramasubbu is the Co-Director of the Oral Biology Ph.D. Program and an Adjunct faculty in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He teaches X-ray crystallography and Protein Folding courses.
His research program focuses on the structural biology to understand the structure-function relationships of proteins that have an impact in the oral cavity. His group uses three-dimensional structures of salivary and bacterial proteins to delineate the structural domains responsible for their functions in the oral cavity. The project utilizes a combination of biochemistry, molecular biology, X-ray crystallography, and computational chemistry techniques.
