Biography

 Dr. Stephen Smith, M.B., B.S., (M.D. equivalent) Ph.D., professor of medicine, joined the critical care team in September, 2000. Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. in neuroscience in 1987 and his M.B., B.S., in 1990 from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in Newcastle, UK. He completed his internship and residency at several hospitals in the UK including the Brompton, Hammersmith, National and Guy’s Hospitals.Following completion of his residency (equivalent), Dr. Smith worked as a fellow in intensive care at Guy’s Hospital in London and at Royal Prince Alfred and Royal North Shore Hospitals in Sydney, Australia. He was awarded F.R.A.C.P. in 1997 following completion of the Advanced Intensive Care Training Program of Royal Austrailian College of Physicians and appointed to the specialist registrar in 1999 in the specialty of intensive care medicine.Prior to joining the faculty at OHSU, Dr. Smith was a research associate in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Smith’s primary research focus was studying synaptic function in the brain. He is particularly interested in regulation of synaptic efficacy and how this is modulated in disease states. His laboratory, in the Division of Molecular Medicine, uses recently developed methods to study the molecular and cellular physiology of cortical nerve terminals.Dr. Smith became a foundation fellow of the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine in 2002.
