    The gut microbiome, a complex community of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbes, plays a critical role in the overall health and well-being of mammals, including companion animals such as dogs and cats. This diverse microbial ecosystem influences various aspects of physiology, from digestion and immune function to mental health and disease susceptibility. As scientific understanding of the microbiome grows, the impact of gut microbiota on nutrition, health and disease in companion animals has become a central topic of research.
