  In the 16th and 17th centuries, Portuguese cultural influence helped spread the cult worldwide. He was made a Doctor of the Universal Church in 1946. In addition to the devotional aspect, numerous well-known sculptors and painters have attempted to present a historically accurate portrait of the Saint. The information that came from hagiographic sources was used in different ways by the artists.
