Ivan Shestakov received his Ph.D. in 1973 from Novosibirsk University, and in 1978 he earned the Doctor of Sciences from the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics in Novosibirsk. In 1970 -1999 Shestakov worked in the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics and in the Novosibirsk State University. Since 1999 he has held the position of full professor at the University of São Paulo.
