Dr. Asfaw has BSc in Plant Production and Dryland Farming from Hawassa University in Ethiopia in 1997, MSc in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Punjab Agricultural University in India in 2002, and PhD in Biology (applied genetics) from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia sandwiched with The Ohio State University in USA for part of his thesis research. He was also a visiting scientist at OSU during 2009/10 and in 2012. Currently, he is working for Advanta Seeds International as sorghum breeder for Africa, based in Ethiopia. Previously, he worked for the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) in different levels of the research position for over 15 years. The last position he held was Senior Researcher. He is interested in crops breeding, population and evolutionary genetics in plant species, especially, on investigating the effect of crop-wild gene flow on the environment. He published his research results in peer reviewed journals. Moreover, he is member of several professional societies.
