Institute of Pathology European Institute of Excellence on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, University Medical Centre of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Germany
Christoph Brochhausen is Group Leader of the Cartilage Tissue Engineering Group at the REPAIR-lap, Head of Electron Microscopy and senior resident of Pathology.
After his education in medicine and anthropology at the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz and the “Université Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg” he became Research Fellow for paediatric clinical pharmacology and junior leader of the osteological research laboratory at the Philipps- University Marburg. He was founding member and executive director of the “Office for Clinical Science and Clinical Trials Management” at the Department of Paediatrics in Marburg.
His research interest is focused on the mechanisms of cartilage degeneration and regeneration with special interest in cartilages Tissue Engineering. In this context he gives special attention to the analyses of the embryological processes during bone-, cartilage- and joint formation to identify suitable candidates for the so called guided tissue engineering. Based on these findings his research group develops and analyses several release strategies for growth factors and signalling molecules. A second focus covers wound healing mechanisms with analyses of the stem cell niches of mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells as well as their interaction with barrier membranes for serosal wound healing. In this context biocompatibility studies for different biomaterials play a special role in his clinical oriented research.
