Biography

Calvin lakhan, Ph.D, is currently a senior research scientist for the Ontario Center of Recycling Research, a non-profit organization devoted to advancing understanding of waste management research and policy in Canada. He holds a Ph.D from the University of Waterloo/Wilfrid Laurier University joint Geography program, and degrees in economics (BA) and environmental economics (MEs) from York University. His research interests and expertise center around evaluating the efficacy of municipal recycling initiatives and identifying determinants of consumer recycling behavior. Calvin has worked as a consultant on projects for Stewardship Ontario, Multi Material Stewardship Manitoba, and Ontario Electronic Stewardship. He possesses particular analytical expertise, and has been tasked with calculating steward fees and best practice system costs for Ontario's Blue Box program.

Research Interest

My research can largely be divided into three areas:
1) Evaluating the efficacy of municipal policy instruments used to promote waste diversion,
2) Optimizing the recycling system to achieve increased diversion while minimizing material management costs, and
3) Examining the role of race and ethnicity as antecedents to recycling behavior.
