Dr, Chanhong Li is currently working as an assistant professor at The Children\\s hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, USA.
Dr. Li’s research has mainly focused on fuel metabolism in pancreatic islets and regulation of insulin secretion in congenital hyperinsulinism (HI), a group of disorders that cause hypoglycemia in infants and children. My work has involved characterizing most of the known disease models of HI, including glutamate dehydrogenase transgenic mice, sulfonylurea receptor 1 knockout mice, short-chain 3-hydroxy fatty acyl-CoA dehydrogenase knockout mice, and glucokinase transgenic mice. We use GC/MS stable isotope tracing technique, including 13C and 15N tracing to study glucose and amino acid metabolism in isolated islets. Recently, we have extended these studies of animal models to examine glucose metabolism and the role of amino acids in regulation of insulin and glucagon secretion by islets from normal, type 2 diabetic humans and islets isolated from patients with HI due to mutations of ATP-dependent potassium channels.
