Gary Rawnsley is Professor of International Communications in the Institute of Communications Studies, University of Leeds. His principal research interests are in public diplomacy, propaganda, soft power and media-military relations – specifically within an East Asian context. He has also researched and published on the role of the media in Taiwan’s democratisation. Professor Rawnsley has published widely in the areas of international communications, history and international relations, including Radio Diplomacy and Propaganda (1996); Cold War Propaganda in the 1950s (1999); Taiwan’s Informal Diplomacy and Propaganda (2000); Political Communication and Democracy (2005); and Global Chinese Cinema (2010). He is currently the co-editor of the Routledge Handbook of Chinese Media and is completing a study of Taiwan’s public diplomacy and soft power. Professor Rawnsley has held visiting positions in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia.
