Biography

Dr. Janvier Gasana, MD, Ph.D, is a tenured associate professor at Florida International University Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work. He holds a medical doctorate degree from National University of Rwanda Medical School and a PhD degree from University of IL at Chicago School of Public Health Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. His Community-based participatory research endeavor started in the Spring of 2000, when Dr. Gasana conducted a Pilot Study on Lead Poisoning in Miami. The work has been expanded to encompass the key residential hazards that include asthma and allergy triggers, mold and moisture, pests and pesticides, injury hazards, humidity, temperature, and poor indoor and outdoor air quality using the concept of Healthy Homes that targets the primary prevention of these key residential hazards and that draws attention to the health disparity/environmental justice and economic burden of housing-related hazards which is quite substantial.

Research Interest

Dr. Janvier Gasana’s research interests are centered around his translational community-based research approach that  has evolved to integrate the lung health and gene-environment interactions and the concept of Healthy Homes that targets the primary prevention of key residential hazards such as childhood lead poisoning, asthma and allergy triggers, mold and moisture, pests and pesticides, injury hazards, and poor indoor and outdoor air quality, and other environmental health hazards and that draws attention to the health disparity/environmental justice and economic burden of housing-related hazards which is quite substantial. The investigation of these public environmental health problems is currently done using meta-analysis and exposure assessment/biological monitoring pilot studies in South Florida.
