Dr. Joanne Thatcher is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology and Interim Head of Department at Aberystwyth University. She has published over thirty academic papers and books including a recent second edition of Coping and emotion in sport (Routledge) and Exercise and sport psychology (Learning Matters). She currently serves on the editorial boards of the Sport and Exercise Psychology Review and the International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology. She is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS), a registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist with the Health Professions Council and past Chair of the BPS Division of Sport & Exercise Psychology.
My research focuses on self-presentation in sport and exercise, competitive stress and anxiety and current research includes further exploring these areas, for instance, examining psychophysiological responses to exercise within the framework of Reversal Theory, and, self-presentation processes in relation to performance and personality variables.Reversal Theoryand future research developments include a multidisciplinary collaborative project (with NHS and departmental colleagues) to examine the use of exercise with patients in palliative cancer care, focusing, from a psychological perspective, on motivation and need satisfaction within the framework of Self-Determination Theory.
