Biography

Dr. Linda Jean Kenix (previously Kensicki) received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001. Upon the completion of her degree, she moved north to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where she spent four years braving the winters as an Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2005, she moved to New Zealand to continue her career at the University of Canterbury. Dr Kenix research has traditionally focused on the representation of politically marginalized groups in mainstream and alternative media. Her recent work has broadened to examine how marginalized groups are utilizing various media as a potential tool for social change. She has published broadly in over 25 international, peer-reviewed academic journals as well as several book chapters. She has presented her work at over 30 conferences around the word and recently published a book titled, "Alternative and Mainstream Media: The Converging Spectrum" with Bloomsbury Academic. In 2008, she was awarded a prestigious Erskine Fellowship and placement as a Visiting Research Fellow at Oxford University. In 2010, she won the award again and was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge. She has ten years of professional media experience in different aspects of visual communication.

Research Interest

The representation of politically marginalized organizations, individuals, and ideologies in the mainstream and alternative news media; how the marginalized use various media to build social and political capital; and the convergence of alternative and mainstream media.
