Brilla received her PhD in Physiology from the University of Oregon. She is a Fellow of various professional organizations: American College of Nutrition, American College of Sports Medicine, and Human Biology Association. She holds multiple certifications, including Certified Nutrition Specialist. She has seven years of clinical experience and previously owned a part-time business providing health screenings and consultations. For the past 25 years, she has been at Western Washington University where she is currently a professor; and before that was on the faculty at Ballarat University, Australia. Main research tracks are magnesium and inspiratory muscle training in health and physical performance. She has numerous publications, both national and international presentations, and has contributed chapters to edited monographs. Her students note that she is challenging yet believes that if one jumps a net will appear.
