Loup Langton recently became Director of the School of Journalism & Broadcasting at Western Kentucky University. His career reflects a balance between creative work and research with a particular passion for Latin America. As Director of the Visual Journalism sequence at the University of Miami, Loup led a faculty team that transformed the program into a cutting-edge curriculum. His book, Photojournalism and Today’s News, Creating Visual Reality published by Blackwell/John Wiley & Sons in 2009 examines the ways in which newsroom culture, economics and routines influence visual reporting in both printed and online media.
This past spring Loup and international photographer friend, Pablo Corral Vega, created and produced the first Pictures of the Year Latino América (POYi Latam) contest that immediately became the largest and most prestigious photojournalism contest in Latin America. Loup also serves as the associate director for Pablo’s photojournalism website, NuestraMirada.org, and he and Pablo co-directed the Descubriendo Ecuador book project published in 1994.
As Director of Photography for Copley Chicago NewspapersLoup helped lead a team that twice produced the Pictures of the Year International Newspaper Photographer of the Year and as Director of Photography for El Universo, he helped change the concept of visual storytelling in Ecuador.
As a member of JB Pictures,Loup photographed throughout the U.S., Africa and the Middle East.He was a contributor to the Homeless in America book in 1987, and his work from Haiti, North Carolina and Ecuador appeared in exhibitions in New York and Washington, D.C. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Texas School of Communication.
