Dr. Newell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. He is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. Dr. Newell’s professional interests include the management of trauma in the elderly and morbidly obese. Dr. Newell is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the Society of Black Academic Surgeons. Before joining University Health Systems and the faculty of the Brody School of Medicine, Dr. Newell completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center at New York Medical College after finishing his general surgical residency at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, New York Medical College, Bronx, New York. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin and a medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
Dr. Newell has several publications, research presentations, book chapters, and lectures to his credit. He is an active participant in a number of local, regional, and national committees.
