Mike Hart, MD, a native of Birmingham, AL, is currently Professor and Assistant Dean of VA Research at Emory University and serves as the Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. He received a BS degree from Duke University, MD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Florida. Dr. Hart served as a faculty member in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Indiana University in Indianapolis for ten years before moving to his current institution, Emory University 12 years ago. His laboratory which focuses on endothelial cell and nitric oxide biology has been continuously funded by the NIH or the VA for nearly twenty years. Current areas of investigative focus include studies examining the ability of the nuclear hormone receptor, to serve as a therapeutic target that regulates expression of NADPH oxidase in disorders associated with vascular oxidative stress including diabetes, chronic alcohol ingestion, and pulmonary hypertension.
