Biography

Dr. Pijush Samui is an associate professor at Centre for Disaster Mitigation and Management in VIT University, Vellore, India. He obtained his B.E. at Bengal Engineering and Science University; M.Sc. at Indian Institute of Science; Ph.D. at Indian Institute of Science. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at University of Pittsburgh (USA) and Tampere University of Technology (Finland). At University of Pittsburgh, he worked on numerical modeling of rock cutting and application of Support Vector Machine (SVM) in Geotechnical Engineering. At Tampere University of Technology, he worked on stability of railway embankment, slope reliability and site characterization. He has more than 12 years of research experience in geotechnical engineering in three countries (India, USA and Finland). His research interests cover a wide range of subjects in geotechnical engineering, including application of soft computing in geotechnical engineering, numerical modeling, landslide, risk and reliability analysis, geostatistics, slope stability, pile foundation, site characterization, rock mechanics, development of different experimental devices and modeling of different seismic hazards. He has published 112 technical papers in journals, 27 technical papers in conferences. He has written 6 books and 9 book chapters. He is the recipient of CIMO fellowship from Finland. Dr. Samui worked as a guest editor in "Disaster Advances" journal. He also serves as an editorial board member in several international journals. Dr. Samui is editor of International Journal of Geomatics and Geosciences. He is the reviewer of several journal papers. Dr. Samui is a Fellow of the International Congress of Disaster Management and Earth Science India. Dr. Samui is the member of several national and international professional societies like Indian Geotechnical Society, Institution of Engineers, Indian Science Congress, World federation of Soft Computing, and Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation (JWG-DMR). He received Sardar Resham Singh Memorial Award from Indian Geotechnical Society. He was selected for Shamsher Prakash Research Award by IIT Roorkee.

Research Interest

Geotechnical engineering, including application of soft computing in geotechnical engineering, numerical modeling, landslide, risk and reliability analysis, geostatistics, slope stability, pile foundation, site characterization, rock mechanics, development of different experimental devices and modeling of different seismic hazards.
