Biography

Born on August 6, 1959 at Unnao (Uttar Pradesh), Dr. P.K. Singh has an excellent academic record. He obtained BVSc & AH with University Bronze Medal and MVSc in the subject of Animal Genetics & Breeding with Chancellor’s Gold Medal from C.S. Azad University of Agric. & Technology, Kanpur. Prior to his joining as Assistant Professor at Veterinary College, Mathura in 1991, Dr. Singh served Union Bank of India as Rural Development Officer and Animal Husbandry Department of U.P. as Veterinary Officer. He served as Assistant Professor till the year 2000 and completed his PhD on “Relative efficacy of different methods and traits in genetic evaluation of Murrah sires” from Agricultural University Kanpur. He joined ICAR as Senior Scientist at NBAGR, Karnal and promoted to the post of Principal Scientist in 2008. Dr. Singh is a distinguished Scientist of India in the field of Animal Genetics and Breeding and worked on different breeds of cattle across the country. Besides a dozen of registered cattle breeds, he also studied some cattle populations like Ganagatiri, Kosali, Binjharpuri, Malanad Gidda, Pullikulam, Hill cattle of Uttarakhand and NER, Nari, Sanchori, Tho Tho, some of which were later recognized as cattle breeds by NBAGR, Karnal. He worked for conservation of Beetal goat, a dairy breed of Indian goat. He also served as In charge of Network Project on Animal Genetic Resources, where he worked on characterization and conservation of more than 25 breeds of livestock and poultry. He has published 79 research papers in national and international journals of repute, 28 monographs on different breeds of Indian livestock, 19 technical papers and delivered more than 40 invited papers in different symposia held across the country. He was actively involved in preparation of Country Report I & II of India on AnGR assigned by FAO and country status report on Farm AnGR of India assigned by SAARC nations’ directorate. He has also involved in policy formulation of different states of India for sustainable enhancement of livestock productivity and conservation of Animal Genetic Resources. He was honored with Taradevi Modi Rashtra Utthan team Award (2010-11) and six awards for presentation of poster in different seminars. He also received the honor of Fellowship of National Academy of Dairy Sciences (India) in 2014.
