Mootanah directs the Medical Engineering Research Group at Anglia Ruskin University in Essex, UK, and is a Visiting Scientist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, USA. She obtained her PhD in total hip replacement and MBA at Anglia Ruskin University and completed her B Tech (Hons) and Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Mauritius.
