Biography

Dr. Suman Das is Director of the Direct Digital Manufacturing Laboratory and Research Group and a Woodruff Faculty Fellow at Georgia Tech. He is a faculty member in the Parker H. Petit Institute of Bioengineering and Bioscience at Georgia Tech. He joined the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering as an Associate Professor with tenure in Fall 2007. Prior, he was a tenured Associate Professor 20062007 and an Assistant Professor 20002006 in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He received his B.S. 1990 in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He obtained his M.S. 1993 and PhD 1998 in Mechanical Engineering as a member of the Laboratory for Freeform Fabrication at The University of Texas Austin. Subsequently, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship there during 1999-2000. His doctoral dissertation titled Direct Selective Laser Sintering of Metals received the 1999 University of Texas Outstanding Dissertation award. He was awarded the 1998 TMS Michael Koczak best paper award from the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, and the 1997 Los Alamos National Laboratory directorrsquo;s postdoctoral fellowship. Dr. Das is a recipient of the 2005 and 2004 Literati Club highly Commended Award for Excellence, the 2004 Society of Manufacturing Engineers M. Eugene Merchant Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, and the 2003 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award.

Research Interest

His current research interests include computational design, fabrication, and characterization of tissue engineering scaffolds; guided bone regeneration; whole joint reconstruction; processing of resorbable polymeric and composite biomaterials; and large-area micro/nanostructure fabrication in polymers and hydrogels for studies in cell biology and tissue engineering
