Biography

Dr. Venkateswarlu Chamcha trained as molecular virologist at National Institute of Virology, India and received a PhD degree for developing a vaccine for Chandipura viral encephalitis disease in 2010. He has very good knowledge in developing vaccines for various viral diseases and testing or conducting various vaccine trials in animal models such as Mice, Rabbits, Guinea pigs and in Rhesus macaques. Being a postdoctoral fellow at Emory University's Yerkes National Primate Research Center since 2010, he is working extensively on HIV vaccine development by using a probiotics organism i.e. lactococcus lactis. This vaccine modality is one of the novel approaches and gave very interesting results and Dr. Chamcha is one of the key people in developing this project. His studies in mice and Nonhuman primates demonstrated that a recombinant L.lactis generates good vaccine specific immune responses targeted mainly in the gut of these animals. Other aspects of his studies involved are conducting some efficacy studies using DNA prime and MVA boost vaccine modalities and understanding the immune correlates of these vaccine mediated immunity and protection to SIV infection. Currently these vaccine modalities have been tested in human clinical trials for HIV vaccine in USA.
