Biography

Victor Louis Sylvia, PhD is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). He received his PhD degree from Texas A&M University, did postdoctoral research at the University of Texas at Austin, and joined the faculty at UTHSCSA. He has authored articles and chapters on cellular signaling mechanisms of vitamin D3 and steroid hormones in bone and cartilage. He served as Chairman of the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee and currently oversees all animal studies in the department. Dr. Sylvia is principal investigator and co-investigator on corporate-sponsored and federally-funded grants and performs bone and soft tissue engineering studies using mouse, rat, rabbit and goat models. He has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is an adjunct professor in the Biomedical Engineering graduate program at the University of Texas as San Antonio. He conducts basic, preclinical and clinical musculoskeletal research.
