In his pre-doctoral training, He had focused on cell ular immune responses in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). He aimed to invest igate the phenotype and function of pathogenic T-cells in this disease, in order to ide ntify new targets for therapeutic intervention. He concluded that CD4+ effector memory T cells (CD4+TEM) represent a promising target for treatment. In addition, He was one of the first to stir up and publish on a defect in regulatory T cells function and increased Th17-cells in patient with AAV. This work was done at the department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology of the UMCG, and the results were 2 published in peer-reviewed journals (see publicatio n list). Furthermore, my PhD thesis was awarded by Dutch Federation of Nephrology.
