Diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly known as diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases in which blood sugar is elevated for an extended period. Symptoms of high blood sugar include frequent urination, increased thirst and increased hunger. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to many complications. Acute complications include diabetic ketoacidosis and non-ketotic hyperosmolar coma. Serious long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney failure, foot ulcers and eye damage. Open access implies unrestricted online access to peer-reviewed research articles. Open access is primarily intended for scholarly journal articles, but also includes an increasing number of book chapters, theses and scholarly monographs. Diabetes articles are open access articles that are easy to read. Articles appear online after the peer review process is complete and are available online permanently and at no cost.
