Antioxidants are substances that can slow or prevent cell damage from free radicals, unstable molecules produced by the body as a reaction to environmental and other pressures. Sometimes, they’re called "free radical scavengers. Antioxidant sources can be natural or man-made. It is thought that certain plant based foods are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants based on plants are some type of phytonutrient or nutrient dependent on plants. The body also develops other antioxidants which are known as endogenous antioxidants. Antioxidants which originate outside the body are called exogenous. Free radicals are cell-produced waste compounds, as the body absorbs food and responds to the environment. If the body cannot efficiently process and remove free radicals, the result may be oxidative stress. This can damage the functioning of cells and the body.Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are also known as Free radicals.
