Aging happens with the passage of time in a cell, an organ, or the total organism. It is a process that goes on all living things over the entire adult life span. Gerontology, the study of the cycle of aging, is committed to recognizing and regulating all the factors that lead to the finitude of human life. It is not exclusively concerned with the weakness that appears so great in human experience, but it deals with a much wider range of phenomena. Species has a life history in which the span of individual life has a suitable relationship to the period of reproductive life and to the reproductive mechanism and course of development. How these relationships evolved is as german to gerontology as it is to the biology of evolution. Therefore, it is important to differentiate between the strictly physicochemical aging processes and the accidental organismic disease and injury processes that lead to death. Therefore, gerontology can be defined as the science of the finitude of life as expressed in the three aspects of longevity, aging, and death, examined from both an evolutionary and an individual (ontogenetic) perspective. Longevity is the span of an organism’s life. Aging is an organism's sequential or progressive change that leads to an increased risk of debility, disease and death.
