AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV infection that occurs when the body's immune system is severely damaged by the virus. In the United States, most people living with HIV do not develop AIDS because taking daily anti-HIV drugs as prescribed stops the progression of the disease.
A person living with HIV is considered to have progressed to AIDS when the number of their CD4 cells falls below 200 cells per cubic millimeter of blood (200 cells / mm3). (In a person with a healthy immune system, the CD4 count is between 500 and 1600 cells / mm3.)
Without HIV medication, people with AIDS usually survive for about 3 years. Once a person suffers from a dangerous opportunistic illness, life expectancy without treatment drops to about 1 year. HIV drugs can still help people at this stage of HIV infection, and they can even save lives. But people who start ART soon after getting HIV have more benefits - that's why HIV testing is so important.
The only solution to know for sure if you have HIV is to get test. The test is relatively simple. You can ask your health care provider for an HIV test. Many medical clinics, substance abuse programs, community health centers and hospitals also offer them. You can also buy a home test kit at a pharmacy or online.
To find an HIV testing center near you, use the HIV service locator.
HIV self-testing is also an option. The self-test allows people to get tested for HIV and find out their results in their own home or other private place. You can buy a self-test kit at a pharmacy or online. Some health services or community organizations also provide free self-test kits
