Alstonia Scholaris

Alstonia scholaris, commonly called blackboard tree or devil tree in English is an evergreen tropical tree in the family Apocynaceae. It is native to southern China, tropical Asia and Australasia. The wood of Alstonia scholaris was recommended for the manufacture of pencils, because it is suitable for nature and the tree grows quickly and is easy to cultivate. In Sri Lanka, its light wood is used for coffins. In Borneo, the wood near the root is very clear and white in color, and is used for net floats, household utensils, slicers, plugs, etc. In Theravada Buddhism, Bodhi of the first Lord Buddha is said to have used Alstonia scholaris as a tree to achieve enlightenment. The 1889 book "Useful Native Plants of Australia" reports that "The powerfully bitter bark of this tree is used by the natives [sic] of India in intestinal complaints (Treasury of Botany). It has proven to be a valuable remedy for chronic diarrhea and advanced stages of dysentery. It has also been found effective in restoring the tone of the stomach and the generally weak system after fevers and other exhausting illnesses (Pharm. From India). It is described in the Pharmacopoeia of India as a tonic, anthelmintic and anti-periodical astringent, it has the highest reputation in the Philippines [sic].
