Capillary electrophoresis is a sensitive and versatile technique that has emerged in the last 10 years at the forefront of analytical methodology. Its applicability is enhanced by short separation times, quick and easy development methods and a requirement for very small quantities of analysis. This article reviews the basic principles of the technique and the range of options that allow the same instrument to be used for the separation and analysis of a wide range of analyzes, large bimoleculars, such as proteins and nucleic acids, to metal and organic ions while having the capacity to solve enantiomers and uncharged molecules.
