An androgen is any natural or synthetic hormone (steroid ) that regulates the male characteristics (their development and maintenance) in vertebrates. Androgens are synthesized in the testes, the ovaries, and the adrenal glands. Androgens are found both in boys and girls and it increases during puberty. The major androgen in males is testosterone. Although androgens are commonly found in males and is seen as male sex hormones, at lower levels, it is also present in females also have them, they function in libido and sexual arousal. Also, androgens are the precursors to estrogens in both men and women.
