Midwifery encompasses care of girls during pregnancy, labour, and therefore the postpartum period, also as care of the newborn.

Midwives often describe their job as 'privileged'. The role they need in preparing women for the delivery of latest life makes them an important presence during all stages of pregnancy, labour and therefore the early postnatal period. Midwifery-led continuity of care is where one or more midwives have the first responsibility for the continuity of look after childbearing women, with a multidisciplinary network of consultation and referral with other health care providers.
