A medical device designed to administer a single dosage of a particular drug is called an autoinjector. Most of them are syringes which are spring loaded. Autoinjectors are easy to use by design and can be used by the patients for self-administration as well. The injection site is depends on the loaded drug. Normally it is used for injecting into the thigh or the buttocks. The need for designing injectors is associated with the hesitation to self-administer a needle-based drug. The needle tip is shielded prior to injection and also has a safety mechanism which prevents accidental injecting. The injection depth can be adjusted. The syringe needle is automatically inserted, just by pressing a button and the drug is delivered. Some autoinjectors have visual display for confirmation of completion of administration. Autoinjectors are fragile and are also prone to contamination as they are made of glass. As a result many companies are now into manufacturing autoinjectors made of plastic
