UC Berkeley is at the forefront of research within the field of bioengineering. Faculty in the Department of Bioengineering work in a wide variety of different areas, based upon their individual training and interests. Nanotechnology involves the event and use of technologies that operate the nanometer length scale, round the size of an outsized biomolecule. Cellular engineering focuses on cell-level phenomena, while tissue engineering and regenerative medicine seek to get or stimulate new tissue for disease treatment. Bioengineering may be a discipline that applies engineering principles of design and analysis to biological systems and biomedical technologies. Examples of bioengineering research include bacteria engineered to supply chemicals, new medical imaging technology, portable disease diagnostic devices, and tissue engineered organs. Today there are more samples of interaction between biology and engineering, particularly within the medical and life-support fields. There's an increasing recognition of the role the engineer can play in several of the biological fields, including human medicine, and, likewise, an awareness of the contributions biology can make toward the answer of engineering problems.
