Bioinformatics

It is an interdisciplinary area that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data, especially when large and complex data sets are available. Bioinformatics as an interdisciplinary field of research incorporates biology, computer science, software engineering, math and statistics to analyze and interpret the biological data. Bioinformatics has been used to evaluate biological questions using mathematical and statistical techniques in silico. Bioinformatics involves biological studies that use computer programming as part of their methodology, as well as unique "pipelines" analyzes that are used regularly, particularly in the genomics sector. Popular applications of bioinformatics include candidate gene recognition and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Such identification is often done in order to better understand the genetic basis of the disease, specific adaptations, desirable properties (especially in agricultural species), or differences among populations.
