Brain Tumor

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and malignant type of primary brain tumor, due to its high heterogeneity and aggressive patterns of brain invasion. Despite recent advances in imaging and surgical techniques, which have enabled more accurate diagnosis and improved tumor resection while maintaining or even improving neurological function, current treatment options for GBM have no impact effective in the long term on disease control and patient survival remains around the year. Newly developed stable nucleic acid lipid particles (SNALP) which were targeted to brain tumor cells by covalent coupling of peptide chlorotoxin (CTX) to the liposomal surface. Stem cells (SC) have been widely used as vehicles for the delivery of therapeutic genes to brain tumors due to their remarkable ability to target tumor cells, when injected either loco [82] or intra-arterially. Although the molecular basis of SC tumor tropism is not yet fully understood, several in vitro studies have provided evidence that cytokines secreted by tumors and growth factors, including vascular endothelial growth factors and derivatives platelets (VEGF and PDGF, respectively) act as chemoattractants that promote the migration of SCs to tumor cells.
