If the pain is from the cancer itself, it can be caused by the cancer that grows into or destroys tissue nearby. It may press on nerves, bones or organs as a tumor develops. Also, the tumor can release chemicals which can cause pain. Or the reaction of your body to the chemicals can bring pain. Cancer care can help relieve the discomfort of these cases. Yet cancer therapies can also cause discomfort, including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. There are a host of different ways. One is by surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or other medication to eliminate the cause of the pain. Some drugs come in tablets or beverages that you swallow; others dissolve quickly in your mouth. Some medications can be received by shots, either under the skin or in a vein; through rectal suppositories; or by wearing a patch on the skin. Other drugs used to treat cancer pain include antidepressants, anti-seizure medicines, and steroids. There are also specialized treatments, such as a nerve block, which is a local anesthetic which is injected into or around a nerve. The barrier prevents pain signals from entering the brain through the nerve pathway. Other therapies might be helpful, such as acupuncture, acupressure, massage, physical therapy, relaxation, meditation and hypnosis.
