The practice of environmental engineering dates back to the dawn of civilization. Ever since groups of individuals began living in semi-permanent settlements, they need had to affect the challenges of providing clean water and removing solid waste and sewage. With the expansion of cities and therefore the advent of large-scale farming and manufacturing, people have also had to stress about air quality and soil contamination.
