Feeding Practices Among Infants

Undernutrition is estimated to be associated with around 2.7 million child deaths per year, or 45% of all child deaths. Infant and young child feeding can be a key area for improving child survival and promoting healthy growth and development. The first 2 years of a child's life are particularly important, since optimal nutrition at this time reduces morbidity and mortality, reduces the danger of chronic diseases and generally promotes better development.

Optimal breastfeeding is so essential that it could save the lives of more than 820,000 children under the age of 5 a year.

However, many infants and young people do not receive optimal nutrition. For example, only about 36% of infants aged 0 to 6 months worldwide were exclusively breastfed during the period 2007-2014.

The recommendations are refined to also meet the needs of infants born to mothers infected with HIV. Antiretroviral drugs now allow these children to breastfeed completely until the age of 6 months and to continue breastfeeding until the minimum age of 12 months with an automatically reduced risk of HIV transmission.
