Glasgow Coma Scale

The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is an Equipment to test the state of the Consciousness of a person who is following a traumatic brain injury and as well as subsequent assessment. This scale is also called as a neurological scale. An individual is evaluated against the basis of the scale, and the resulting points give a person's score between 3 -indicating deep unconsciousness and either 14 - original scale or 15 - more widely used modified or revised scale. This GCS was published in 1974 by the professors of neurosurgery named Graham Teasdale and Bryan J. Jennett, at the University of Glasgow's Institute of Neurological Sciences at the city's Southern General Hospital. Head Injury Classification: Severe Head Injury = GCS score of 8 or less; Moderate Head Injury = GCS score of 9 to 12; Mild Head Injury = GCS score of 13 to 15. The usage of this scale has spread up to a wide range as operated by emergency medical services, nurses, and physicians as being applicable to all acute medical and trauma patients. And especially in hospitals, it is also used in monitoring patients in intensive care units. The modern structured approach to assessment of the Glasgow Coma Scale improves accuracy, reliability and communication.
