Health Education

The first health education programs focused on hygienic behaviors that could help stem the transmission of communicable diseases. As the conditions that affected children and adolescents turned into chronic, noncommunicable and multifactorial diseases and conditions, the limits of traditional health education became apparent. Teaching strategies alone could not achieve the behavioral goals of school health programs. Over time, the economic, social and political determinants - as opposed to an individualistic and behavioral factor - of health have become more widely accepted as part of health education. As it stands, school health education is part of the larger framework of coordinated school health programs.

Coordinated school health programs address the health of children and adolescents as a multisectoral enterprise shared by health, medical, educational and social service agencies. By working together, several agencies provide students with a comprehensive set of programs and services to prevent disease and promote health.
