Health Literacy

Strong health literacy enables people to develop the skills and confidence necessary to make informed decisions about their health and that of their families, to be active partners in their care, to navigate effectively in health care systems and to effectively advocate with their political leaders and policy makers.

Another important factor is the receptivity to health literacy, sometimes called organizational health literacy. This is how services, organizations and systems make health information and resources available to people, depending on their strengths and limitations in health literacy.

By empowering people and creating supportive environments, better health literacy and greater responsiveness in health literacy promote equity in health outcomes by making health care accessible to all, regardless of individual capabilities.
