The Human Immuno Deficiency viruses (HIV) are two species of Lentivirus (a retrovirus subgroup) infecting humans. In course of time, they cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive. HIV is a sexually transmitted disease and occurs by contact with or transfer of blood, semen, pre-ejaculate,and vaginal fluids in most of the cases. HIV is present as both virus within infected immune cells and free virus particles within the body fluids.
HIV infects important cells of the immune system, such as macrophages, helper T cells (CD4+ T cells) and dendritic cells. Low levels of CD4+ T cells is observed in HIV infection.
