Chemical engineering involves turning the raw materials into useful goods such as clothes, food and beverage, and electricity. Chemical engineers concentrate on processes and products – developing and designing processes for product creation; either working on enhancing existing processes, or creating new ones. This means that they do have an interest in controlling money, preserving the environment and ensuring health and safety. Chemical engineers are often referred to as 'universal engineers' because they are such a broad discipline - they are simply concerned with turning one element into something else. Many people are uncertain about how much chemistry a degree in chemical engineering involves. Ultimately, as with all degrees in engineering, physics and maths are the most important elements of the course, with around 20 percent of the course being chemistry-related – especially physical chemistry. There are some elements related to biology in chemical engineering but these would typically be more specialized areas. If you want to specialize in chemistry then it is probably not for you to get a degree in chemical engineering.
