Information science is an academic field which deals primarily with analysis, classification, collection, manipulation, movement, storage, retrieval, dissemination and protection of information. Inside and outside the field, practitioners research the application and use of expertise in organizations as well as the relationship between individuals, organizations and everything else that exists with the aim of creating, replacing, or understanding information systems. Information science is historically linked to computer science, psychology, technology and intelligence. Nevertheless, information technology also integrates elements of various fields, such as archival science, cognitive science, commerce, law, linguistics, museology, management, mathematics, philosophy, public policy, and social sciences. Information science focuses on understanding issues from the stakeholder perspective, and then applying information and other technologies as necessary. In other words, it first addresses systemic issues, rather than individual pieces of technology within that system.
